I try to get back to Edinburgh by Thursday night so you’ll find me in the office or at meetings around the constituency on Fridays and over the weekend.

I am lucky to have a huge number of brilliant local organisations in my patch who I visit as often as possible.

As an MP one of the most rewarding part of the job is working with the many amazing communities across Edinburgh East, supporting local campaigns, and meeting people in organisations, community groups, businesses, social services and agencies who work within the constituency.

I aim to be approachable and accessible to constituents so that I get a feel for what’s going on and what the issues are, and to ensure people feel they can come to me about anything I might be able to help with.

I hold regular advice surgeries and do as much as I can to link in and make sure we are working effectively with all the local advice services who operate in Edinburgh East.

I am now holding monthly ‘street surgeries’ where I write out to a number of streets to let them know when I will be in their area. I can then pop in to see anyone who would like a visit. Look out for a letter in the post – although it will take me a while to get round the whole of Edinburgh East.

The main benefit of Brexit taking more of a back seat was having a bit more time in the constituency during April. I hold regular advice surgeries and it's always great to see what's going on in the buildings while I'm there. I got to join in with a spot of body bingo after holding my surgery at ⁦the Restalrig Lochend⁩ hub - a welcome change of scene!Regular subscribers to my newsletter will know ...

Brexit was a key focus in the constituency this month (unsurprisingly).  I hosted a public meeting in Portobello - a huge turnout of folk packed into Bellfield and the message was clear - they wanted a People's vote and to stop Brexit. Huge thanks to Kristy Hughes and Kirsty Haigh for joining me and sharing their expertise.  And thanks to Tollcross Community Action Network who invited me along to ...

As you may be aware, I love August. I get to sleep in my own bed every night, get out and about in the constituency and take in some of the Fringe highlights. As the MP for around 80% of Fringe venues I do feel I have a role to play in looking at how the city can benefit most from the summer Festivals.  I used my August column in the Edinburgh Evening News to do just that – you can read it here.I ...

The benefit of being the MP for Edinburgh's seaside is that when the sun came out, I got to take the team (or at least those who work on a Friday) for a wee post work treat. Nothing better than finishing the week with an in ice-cream on the beach! It was great to attend the opening celebration for The Edinburgh Tool Library which is now resident on the ground floor of Tribe Porty on Windsor Place. ...

Congrats to the team at Action Porty for all their hard work in achieving such the community buy out and for creating such a fantastic resource for the area. As you may be aware, I've taken a serious interest in short term lets and the impact they are having across the constituency. This month I met with Cou...
