I try to get back to Edinburgh by Thursday night so you’ll find me in the office or at meetings around the constituency on Fridays and over the weekend.

I am lucky to have a huge number of brilliant local organisations in my patch who I visit as often as possible.

As an MP one of the most rewarding part of the job is working with the many amazing communities across Edinburgh East, supporting local campaigns, and meeting people in organisations, community groups, businesses, social services and agencies who work within the constituency.

I aim to be approachable and accessible to constituents so that I get a feel for what’s going on and what the issues are, and to ensure people feel they can come to me about anything I might be able to help with.

I hold regular advice surgeries and do as much as I can to link in and make sure we are working effectively with all the local advice services who operate in Edinburgh East.

I am now holding monthly ‘street surgeries’ where I write out to a number of streets to let them know when I will be in their area. I can then pop in to see anyone who would like a visit. Look out for a letter in the post – although it will take me a while to get round the whole of Edinburgh East.

I was very happy to put my name to this joint letter with Edinburgh SNP colleagues about curbing numbers of Airbnb-type short term let flats in Edinburgh.I welcome the Scottish Government's analysis of responses to the short term lets consultation and I want to see new regulations to curb problem holiday lets to be piloted here in the capital. I'm proud of our Team SNP approach to seek positive ch...

One of my favourite (and toughest) jobs of the year is judging the Portobello Sandcastle competition. This year was no different with lots of families and individuals battling the wind - though thankfully not the rain - to make some incredible creations. Congrats to Eleanor, her dad Jonathan and all who took part! Thanks to Rosy and the team Art Walk Porty for letting me get inside the kiln and gi...

August is usually a month that's focussed solely on the constituency. It's the month where my newsletter is a jolly affair telling you about all the fantastic organisations I've visited. And I will do that. But first we have to talk about events in Westminster. Last week the Prime Minister chose to ask the Queen to prorogue parliament, effectively reducing the amount of time available to stop a n...

August is an incredibly busy time in Edinburgh.  The Fringe is starting alongside the International Festival and soon to be joined by the Book Festival. I'm proud to be the MP for the majority of Fringe venues, and for the Fringe Society.  Last month I joined up with Shona McCarthy, Chief Executive of the Fringe for a meeting with the then Secretary of State at DCMS to discuss continued funding. B...

It was absolutely fascinating to be shown round the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation earlier by the director, Ed Craig. Part of Edinburgh University but working very closely with the Scottish Government and other public sector organisations, like councils, there is nothing else quite like it. ECCI also hosts students to ensure they are close to the research and the opportunities to feed into...
